Etsy AI disclosure in 2026: the complete guide (and how to stay safe)

Etsy started enforcing AI disclosure on Jan 14, 2026. Here's exactly what you must disclose, the three steps to comply, what's exempt, and what happens if you skip it.

If you've used AI anywhere in your Etsy listings — to write a description, generate a mockup, or create artwork — this affects you. On January 14, 2026, Etsy began enforcing its AI-disclosure policy, and it's already removed thousands of listings for skipping it. Here's exactly what's required, in plain English.

What changed

Etsy now requires you to disclose when generative AI meaningfully shaped a listing. "Meaningfully shaped" means AI created or substantially changed the words, the images, or the design — not tiny touch-ups. This is a real, enforced policy now, not a suggestion.

Do you have to disclose? (the quick test)

You must disclose if you used AI for any of these:

  • The text — an AI-written or AI-rewritten title, tags, or description
  • The images — AI-generated photos or mockups, or AI that meaningfully edited them
  • The design — AI-generated artwork or the product design itself

You don't need to disclose these everyday edits:

  • Background removal that doesn't add new content
  • Cropping, resizing, color and lighting correction
  • Spell-check and grammar-check
  • Straight translation (that doesn't rewrite for tone)
  • Etsy's own tag suggestions

The three steps to comply

If you're in the "must disclose" group, do all three:

  1. Tick the AI attribute. In the listing form, check "I used AI-generative technology."
  2. Change the maker attribution. Switch "Made by" to "Designed by" when AI created or altered the item.
  3. State it in your description. Add a clear line near the top of your description (buyers read the opening lines most). For example:

Please note: AI tools were used in creating parts of this listing (such as its description and/or imagery). Every order is personally reviewed and fulfilled by me.

What happens if you don't

Listings that use AI without disclosing can be removed or buried in search — even if the product itself is fine. Repeat violations can trigger a shop-wide review. In Q1 2026 alone, Etsy removed roughly 12,000 listings and issued about 8,500 warnings. This is not worth the risk to your shop.

Common questions

Does using ChatGPT to write my description count? Yes — an AI-written or AI-rewritten description must be disclosed.

What if AI only helped a little? If it meaningfully shaped the content, disclose it. Minor spell-check doesn't count; a full rewrite does.

Will disclosing hurt my sales? No. A short, honest line near the top is fine, and buyers increasingly expect transparency. Getting removed for not disclosing hurts far more.

The safest way to use AI on Etsy

Use AI to make your listing better, disclose it correctly, and keep the final voice yours. That's exactly what Listing Bench is built for: it rewrites weak listings in your own voice and flags precisely what you need to disclose — so an AI-assisted listing helps your shop instead of getting it flagged.
