The Etsy SEO checklist: 12 things to fix before anything else (2026)
A practical, no-fluff Etsy SEO checklist — titles, tags, attributes, photos, and the small things that quietly cost you rank. Work through it top to bottom.
Etsy SEO isn't complicated, but it's easy to leave points on the table. Here's a tight checklist you can run on any listing, in priority order. Fix the ones near the top first — they move the needle most.
1. Front-load your title with a real buyer phrase
Etsy weights the first 40 characters of your title most, and that's what shows in a browser tab. Lead with the exact phrase a buyer would type — "personalized birth flower necklace," not "beautiful unique gift for her."
2. Use all 13 tags — as multi-word phrases
Every empty tag slot is a search you'll never appear in. Fill all 13, and make them multi-word phrases ("dainty gold necklace"), not single words ("necklace"). Single words are impossibly competitive and mostly wasted.
3. Don't repeat; spread your coverage
Don't burn tags repeating a phrase that's already dominant in your title. Use the 13 slots to reach adjacent searches — synonyms, occasions, buyer types.
4. Fill every attribute and pick the most specific category
Attributes (color, material, occasion) and your category are relevancy signals Etsy treats almost like hidden tags. Fill them all, accurately. It's free relevancy most sellers skip.
5. Make the first photo stop the scroll
In search results, buyers see your first photo and title — nothing else. Fill the frame with the product, make it clear at thumbnail size (most people are on phones), and show what makes yours different in that first image.
6. Nail the first line of your description
Etsy shows the opening of your description in some placements, and it contributes to search. Open with what the item is and why it's worth buying — not "Welcome to my shop!" Work your main phrase in naturally.
7. Check your tag character limit
Each tag must be 20 characters or fewer, and no duplicates — Etsy rejects both. If a phrase is too long, shorten it.
8. Price and shipping without sticker shock
A fair all-in price beats a low price with high shipping. Consider building shipping in and offering "free shipping," which Etsy also favors.
9. Have enough listings
Etsy rewards active shops with more listings. Each one is another door into your shop and another set of phrases you can rank for.
10. Keep it fresh
Update stale listings periodically. Search shifts and seasons change; revisit your weakest listings a few times a year.
11. Disclose AI if you used it
If AI shaped your listing, disclose it (enforced since Jan 2026) — see the full guide. Non-compliant listings lose visibility.
12. Measure instead of guessing
Most sellers optimize by vibes and never know what helped. Get an objective read: Listing Bench scores your listing against these exact factors and tells you which one is dragging it down, so you fix the right thing. Grade a listing free and work the list top to bottom.
